Pentre Broughton SchoolThe new primary school at Pentre Broughton is a combination of new and existing buildings on varying site levels. It was the client's intention to refurbish the existing stone structures and demolish some timber buildings which occupied the lower end of the site. The problem was then to overcome the site level difference posed on a hillside site, by linking the remaining stone building with a new structure to form a new primary school. The basis of the design evolved from a semi open plan concept arranged around a central atrium whilst acknowledging the constraints of reusing existing structures and the changes in site levels. The atrium acts as a fulcrum linking the three existing stone structures and also as a springboard for the introduction of bright light colours and the overall feeling of space which radiates into all the areas adjacent. Various features have been applied within the atrium such as planting and colourful montage wall murals, which can be added to by the pupils artwork. To encourage an environment which is lively and fun to learn in, extensive use has been made of a range of primary colour applied to doors, ironmongery, pinboards and timber structures. This design approach has been well received by both client and user. |
