Carmarthen Castle

Phases 1 and 2

Client: Carmarthenshire County Council

TACP were appointed to undertake the restoration ad conservation of the southern flank of Carmarthen Castle. The castle, the majority of which is a Scheduled Ancient Monument, was restored in two phases due to budgetary and time constraints and comprised the following;

  • Obtaining Building Regulations, Scheduled Ancient Monument Consent and submitting an application for an Ancient Monument Grant to CADW for Phase 2 of the restoration works.
  • Underpinning of undermined wall areas, vegetation clearance, repointing and consolidation of existing masonry to both the Square and Round Towers.
  • Stabilisation of embankments.
  • Creation of new upper and lower concourses.
  • Provision of new staircases, accesses and floor finishes within the towers and between the upper and lower concourses.
  • The formation of adjoining public spaces.

The enhancement works were undertaken using high quality materials respecting both the castle's integrity as a Scheduled Ancient Monument and its visual prominence overlooking the southern road and rail gateways to Carmarthen town. Materials included natural stone, black brick paviers and stainless steel.
