Ecology

Our ecology and nature conservation service combine many years of knowledge and experience in ecological and environmental consultancy throughout the UK, covering all terrestrial habitats and species and a majority of aquatic habitats and species.  From early stage survey and identification of potential constraints and opportunities through ecological assessment, planning submission, presenting evidence at public inquiries and discharge of conditions we work with project and client teams to deliver proportionate and integrated ecological mitigation and enhancements that maximise benefits whilst working within scheme budgets and programme.

We have considerable experience in the resolution of ecological and nature conservation issues including protected species licensing, for both singular and multi-species, designated sites, mitigation provision and management of indirect effects such as air quality and light pollution.  As a multi-disciplinary practice, we also offer expertise in landscape architecture and arboriculture, which means that our ecologists have a genuine understanding of these aspects, providing a fully integrated design service.

As a small company we regularly work within multi-disciplinary design and project teams, following their processes and procedures.  Our long-standing relationships with many local and national authorities, environmental bodies and other consultants allows us to efficiently progress scheme, mitigation and licence designs and approvals.

We are experienced in ecological survey, impact assessment and mitigation design guidance and broader guidance such as BS42020 and BREEAM, as well as being able to apply our own knowledge and experience to design and implement bespoke proposals and measures, allowing us to contribute to full project delivery and ensure the client commitments are met.

Our ecologists:

  • Hold survey licences in both England and Wales for bats, dormice and great crested newts

  • Are Named Ecologists, accredited agents and assistants on a variety of mitigation and conservation licences, particularly for bats, dormice, badger, great crested newt and water voles.

  • Have a large team of approved sub-consultant and freelance ecologists including national experts in fisheries, bryophytes, invertebrates, birds, badgers, otters and white-clawed crayfish.

Public consultation is a key stage in many projects, for which we develop engaging and effective materials to portray the ecological requirements.   We are able to make full use of the graphic skills we have in-house to offer a range of presentation styles to suit the audience and budget, drawing on skills from hand-sketching to photorealistic 3D rendering.

Our projects cover a diverse range of sectors, including education, retail, residential, industrial, conservation, infrastructure, heritage, public recreation and urban realm.
